ASC Series: Sizing External Resistors

Q: On page 35 of your ASC series operating manual, you show a formula to calculate for the external resistance necessary for the driver's inputs, such as the PULSE and DIRECTION inputs (also CW/CCW):

R (ohms) = V - 1.5 (voltage) / 10mA - 220 (ohms)

What is the 1.5? What is the 220 ohm? Why are we doing this?

A: 1.5 refers to the 1.5v voltage drop when current is flowing through a diode. If you check the internal circuit diagram, you will see one diode in there. If you have multiple diodes in the circuit, it's V - (1.5 x [# of diodes]). This may also explain some of our other circuits when your external resistance calculation is not matching up with our specifications in the literature. The 220 ohm is the built-in resistor that we already have in the circuit.
